Tips from the community
A fiery-orange tunnel of gates greets you at Fushimi Inari Shrine, one of Japan’s more popular destinations (and now photo ops, since the age of Instagram) located in the city of Kyoto. Hundreds of gates line a pathway that winds up the mountain, creating a stunning canopy of color you can walk right through. Since there’s no admissions fee, it’s the perfect stop for those looking for budget-friendly things to do in Japan.

One of Japan’s great sights is a row of torii gates leading to the top of the hill, made famous by the film adaptation of Memoirs of a Geisha. The effect of wandering through this winding path is truly surreal, and it’s rarely as busy as you’d think it would be. Torii gates are a wonderful affectation of Japanese society, protecting shrines and temples from demons and bad spirits. In that regard, Fushimi Inari Taisha feels like the most blessed place on Earth.

There are thousands of Inari shrines in Japan, but the most famous is Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto. Built in 711 A.D. in honor of Inari, the god of rice, the Shinto shrine is where folks pray for a variety of things, from bountiful harvests to a safe home to business prosperity.
